Interested in A&R?

Comments

ah but your impressive beard gives your age away... :-).. my 23 year old brother has been desperately trying to grow some facial hair for weeks...

I got asked for ID buying booze in Sainsbury's about a month ago. That was one of the happiest days of my life.

As for the A&R thing... It's nice to see a musician out scouting for bands... I think it's far too easy for people to misdirect their anger over a lack of success... It's best to just do it for yourselves people... It's taken me the longest time to figure out that people will notice you when you just stick to what you do, rather than changing to chase that elusive deal...

Good Read. Thanks.

I don't think I want to know whos' comment inspired this post, but I think it's good that you explained this to people. Everyone had their expectations when they heard you were coming to Vox, and no... I think no one really knew what you were supposed to be doing. But since when would age have anything to do with your schooling or training?

I'm sure EVERYONE is a little guilty of over-expecting what was really supposed to be going on here, including me, (and I apologize again) but I'd think people's anxieties were to be expected with this kind of venture.

Personally, I understand the TON of E-Mails you must be getting on a daily basis... But I'm sure that when you say you'll check something out, you will whether you comment on it or not. I don't require a "pat on the back", especially with some of the fine music I've heard here at Vox, but I do like to know that someone has listened. -Especially if there's something they could tell me which could help to improve my songs. -I can't speak for anyone else 'tho...

I do have a question 'tho...

Does this mean that Columbia/RCA is more interested in bands over the single songwriter, or is there another plan for the single songwriters?

They're essentially just interested in good music. Columbia signed Mark Ronson who is a producer yet has been marketed as an artist, lots of collaborations and such. Whereas you get conventional signings over here too such as The Hoosiers at RCA, Editors etc. I've been in meetings recently where we have been listening to solo songwriters too. So anything goes really, as long as it's good.

Very cool! Sounds great!

Well, back to work I go... Have a good day and thanks for answering my question!

Thanks for taking the time and explaining in detail what you do. I see you are a very busy dude, keep doing what you do and continue to have fun.
Thanks very much, I do try. :-)

Hey IB,

Good read! It's always interesting to hear what goes on behind the scenes...I was thinking the other day about A & R stuff, Listening to good music, meeting new peeps; I'm sure it's not so easy as that though!!! Ellie @ BigBadCity x

It's not always listening to good music. The meeting new people is good though. What happening with your stuff at the mo? Still with BBC?

Haha! Forgot about that bit....I was thinking it :S lol!
Ah yes still BBC ing it :D but always good to keep options open I suppose, not sure which way to go!So got my solo page too which I can sit and upload to whenever as a solo artist and the guys can build around the tracks too.
Still got loads of stuff to record with BBC!...just trying to work out the best way of doing it.. We've got this sponsor who want to do a vid..but might be better to sponsor a load of our recordings..Not sure?! :S
