Firstly, big thanks to all those who have contributed so far to the discussion taking place on the Death or Renaissance post. It seems this discussion is still going on and I'd like to give a special thanks to Steve who normally writes on his howtosplitanatom blog but I asked him to contribute his views as I recently read some very interesting posts on his views of the current state of music.
I was handed a really interesting Times article on slicethepie today which I think is very relevant to some of the comments made on the post. I prattle on about what I think is required to make great albums and such so would be good to hear your views too.
Anyhow, I was invited to a screening at Rex last night of The Darjeeling Limited, the new film by Wes Anderson (Life Aquatic, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket). It was excellent, with the same use of excruciating silence, dead-pan dialogue and and the wonderfully odd characters you would expect from Anderson.
I don't know if it's because of the bias of my background but the soundtrack was excellent. There are a couple of scenes of very long, slow motion takes with great music which alone would be reason for seeing this film. These scenes occur as uplifting, emotive experiences for both the characters and the audience.
For Natalie Portman fans, she plays a very short, minor role of a bad-news ex-girlfriend in an opening short called 'Hotel Chevalier' as a prelude to the main feature. A really interesting bit of film which leaves you with some questions to be answered in the feature. Plus her getting naked within minutes of the opening was nice. Obviously, I look at such scenes for purely their artistic merit but was pleasantly surprising nonetheless for many in the theare I think. :-)
I'd really recommend this film which is unusual for me as I'm no film buff. It's not too heavy but does have it's highs and lows and as usual for Anderson exploring some questions of self, perceptions of relationships etc.
Anyhow, I'll stop trying to be Jonathon Ross and get back to my proper job. Looks like a lot of new stuff came in today.
Hope all is well with you.
